Four Areas In Your Gym That Must Be Kept Sanitized

Posted on: 24 October 2018

If you are a gym owner in a cold climate, you are probably gearing up for a busy winter season. Once the leaves and temperatures drop and the autumn rains that eventually become snowflakes start, most gym owners see a lot more customers each day. That means more people traipsing in and out with dirty boots and shoes. It also means more germs on the equipment. Successful gym owners recognize the importance of keeping their gyms clean. Here are four areas that should not be overlooked.

Locker Rooms

The shower areas, locker rooms, saunas, and whirlpool areas see action by every customer, every visit, and usually twice. People come in with their street clothes and shoes on, make their way to the locker room, and change into their workout clothes. They workout and come back to the locker room, and then either hop into the sauna or whirlpool or shower before getting dressed again.

With all this back and forth activity, your floors will quickly become dirty. Additionally, the warm, moist climate of a locker room makes it the perfect breeding ground for bacteria, fungi, such as those that cause athlete's foot, mold and mildew, and other germs that can make your customers sick.

Dumb Bells

The free weight and dumb bell areas are always popular. That's a lot of sweaty hands touching the same piece of equipment over and over. In addition to germs, other people's perspiration is everywhere.

Floor Mats

Stretching, gymnastics, yoga, and other aerobic exercises require a lot of time spent on the floor mats. While street shoes and their dirt aren't typically allowed in these areas, you will still find perspiration on the mats, not to mention shed skin cells. As the skin is the largest organ and there is a lot of skin-mat contact during yoga poses and floor stretches, it's important they remain bacteria-free.

The Common Areas

Most gyms offer an area for their members to get an energy drink, a breakfast smoothie, or even a complete meal of healthy lunch options. It's also often a place for people to gather for impromptu meetings or scheduled classes. Whether you just have a simple coffee pot, microwave, and refrigerator, or offer a full-sized cafeteria and conference rooms, gathering areas can quickly become dirty.

As a gym center gets so much business, it needs to be cleaned at least once a day. Larger centers in busy metropolitan areas may even need to be cleaned twice daily. A professional commercial cleaning service is your best bet for keeping a clean and safe facility. Many commercial janitorial services will also be able to provide your gym with quality cleaning and paper supplies, items such as hand sanitizers and soap dispensers, as well as do your towels.
