Ask the Right Questions

Have the following list of issues you wish to discuss prepared:

1. Background Checks – This is a must-have when hiring a person that may be given access to your home when you are not around. Most agencies do background checks, but be sure to verify that information. If you hire an independent cleaner, you will need to perform and pay for your own background check.

2. Bonding and Insurance – If the cleaner accidentally damages property in your home, insurance provided by the agency covers it. Missing property may also be covered.

3. Cost – You may be provided with an estimate of services, but be sure you understand the number of hours and days and how often the cleaner will clean. You can expect the first cleaning to cost more and then to pay a flat fee per visit or per hour after that.

4. Supplies – Don't just assume that a cleaning company will come armed with all the cleaning supplies and tools they will need to clean your home. If you specifically want only certain cleaning products to be used, you may have to provide them yourself. More and more companies, however, use environmentally friendly cleaning products. Providing large tools like vacuum cleaners is often the responsibility of the resident.

5. Communication – You must feel comfortable with both the agency and the cleaner and be able to make suggestions and provide feedback on the services. If a cleaner is not performing up to par, you should be able to have an alternate cleaner sent and the job should be redone to your satisfaction.
